I have a windows 98 system(old I know, it runs great though) Im looking to build a web site that can be found on the web such as if googled. I want to be able to sell/advertise some of my furniture and other things online via the site.

Hi, good questions…
There’s a whole lot of different ways that you can go about creating a website. You can build it yourself from the ground up with a free software tool like KompoZer which is a wysiwyg editor. (What You See Is mostly What You Get)!
Another similar tool (better than KompoZer I think) for building sites is called Arachnophilia. It’s a great tool but you almost need to have some knowledge of how html works, OR you need to be interested in learning how to do basic html…
Having said that… You can also find some nice website templates online and import them into these software tools and go from there. That’s what I do. I find free templates and I edit them to the look I want. This works pretty well for me, and I’m definitely not a coder or programmer.
I have a bare basic understanding of how it all works.
Then there’s other wysiwyg editors out there too, free and not free. For example, this is Mark Hendrick’s html editor (costs $):

Another option is the free monthly websites:

What happens here is that you get a 10 page website on a specific niche every month. You’re free to do what you want with it. You can monetize it, or modify it, or upload it to your own host, or upload it to one of the software tools I mentioned above, etc. It’s actually a great way to learn…
Another way to go is by using a blog. Look over WordPress.org (free) and see how powerful it is. Blogging is an easier way to go… you don’t have to do any ‘designing’ – but you’ll want to post your content often!
(And find a wordpress template that you love).
By the way, WordPress has fantastic support, great helpful forums, hundreds of great templates, and lots more.
Another tool that I use is called Site Built It. It’s a complete suite of tools, and really does an excellent job in helping you get a site up. You can see it here:

I have had fantastic results with my Site Build It site and it currently supports me.
I really hope this helps… Let me know if you want more info…

If I were you id sell on ebay. But if you want to make a site, you should use www.freewebs.com
The easy program I can think of is FrontPage. You have to then upload your template onto the web and create a domain.
If you can code the most basic program you can use to build a website is notepad. I wouldn’t recommend it but you can use it to make a web page.
Just post the stuff you want to sell on the local Craigslist server near you.
This is a lot easier than building a website just to sell some stuff. Since most people will probably never see it.
Don’t pay for any program. Some reputable web hosts offer site builder for free. As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
One of these services is reachable at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . This company offers "Free Site Builder" that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). They also offer hundreds of various customizable templates.
