Im a bit confused. Im trying to convert a wired CAT5 internet to wireless. I first thought I needed a cable modem and then a wireless router but the internet is coming from a wired CAT5 cable on the wall, not cable TV. So do I need just a router or both?

I have Verizon internet.
I tried taking the other end of the Ethernet cord from my modem and simply plugging it into my lapatop and it said it was connected to an ‘unidentified local network’, but the internet didn’t work. What do I have to do to get it to work?

I have 3 broadband modems, An old Aztech USB modem and two wireless router modems from Prolink and Belkin. Recently both Prolink and Belkin took ages to link up to internet and the signal is very unstable. I am now using the old USB modem which has no trouble linking up to the internet but my kids are complaining for the lack of wireless feature.
