I just want to be able to get at my movies and school stuff from other computers. I’ve tried apache but i can’t seem to get it to work even on a closed network let alone the open web.

You’ll need to set up the FTP server on your computer. I like to use the FileZilla server – it’s free and easy.
Don’t forget to set up the server to share from a directory, and if you’re going to share over the internet, you’ll need the open and forward the appropriate ports in your router (default FTP port is 21)
